Bohuslav Fuchs

The Gallery of Architecture in Brno presents the exhibition which was created for the 120th anniversary of birth one of the biggest czechoslovak architect.
This project is realised in co-operation with The Brno City Museum and The Czech Television with a financial support of The Statutory City of Brno and The Czech Architecture Foundation.

Why is a mark and a lifework of Bohuslav Fuchs so exceptional and inspiring and not only in the time of the origin but also nowadays?

The exhibition tries to answer those questions with a help of twelve comments of contemporary significant architects annotating twelve chosen projects of Bohuslav Fuchs. Annotations are extended by technical drawing, photos of origin and pictures of present condition. The exhibition also includes two models of the most famous Fuchs's buildings. Those are - model of Hotel Avion and model of City of Brno Pavilion located in Brno Exhibition Centre. Moreover, the exhibition is supplemented by Fuchs's correspondence with Le Corbusier and an interview for Czech Television.

Bohuslav Fuchs is one of the most Czech famous architects in the 20th century who is well known abroad. This architect, urbanist, theorist, designer and professor, who is inseparably connected to functionalism in Brno started his career by studying Academy of Art in Prague at Jan Kotěra studio, where he was employed afterwards.  In 1922 Fuchs permanently settled in Brno, where he worked as an employee of local Building Authority from 1923. From 1938 to 1940 he was employed as a teacher of School of Applied Arts in Zlín and then from 1945 to 1958 he acted as a pedagogue of Brno University of Technology, where he was appointed to position of the professor. Bohuslav Fuchs was the member of numerous professional organisations – for the example Mánes Union of Fine Arts, correspondent member of Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London, a permanent delegate of International Congresses of Modern Architecture (CIAM) and the honorary vice-chairman of International Federation for Housing and Planning (IFHTP).  In 1968 Fuchs was appointed national artist of Czech Republic.

In the each corner and each detail, I can find something that shows brilliant skills of the architect, designer and also the human", said respected Czech architect Eva Jiřičná, who is one of the personalities that guides the exhibition and a documentary for Czech Television. Professor Vladimír Šlapeta sees in the person of Bohuslav Fuchs critical personality of Czech architecture. " His realised projects in Bohemia, Moravia and Slovak Republic literally create landmarks, that line an evolution of our contemporary architecture – from the water power station in Háj near Mohelnice, Central Cemetery Ceremonial Hall in Brno, to the City of Brno Pavilion, Hotel Avion, Fuchs's villa, City spa in Brno-Zábrdovice, Masaryk Student Home, Vesna Professional Secondary School, Moravian Bank, Morava Sanatorium, aerodynamic villas and to the organic-shaped Green Frog Pool, AKA office building and Hotel Vlčina.“
