OST WEST OST
The opening of the exhibition "OST WEST OST – Berlin Postwar Modernism" for the new cultural stations will take place on October 21, at 3:00 p.m., at the entrance to the Schillingstraße subway station (corner of Karl-Marx-Allee and Schillingstraße), at the invitation of the Berlin State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments. Guests from the cultural, political, and academic communities will be present. The exhibition will be opened by Kai Wegner, Governing Mayor of Berlin, and is now on view at the Weberwiese and Schillingstraße subway stations (U5).
The exhibition "OST WEST OST – Berlin Postwar Modernism" will, for the first time, make the architectural heritage of the postwar period directly visible at the entrances to the Schillingstraße and Weberwiese subway stations. At one of the most important sites in Berlin's urban development – Karl-Marx-Allee – visitors can experience how East and West responded to the challenges of reconstruction after 1945 with different guiding principles. The exhibition makes this diversity and ideological competition tangible, as well as the topicality of questions about housing, urban design, and public space. The two recently completed subway stations tell the eastern part of the story of construction and counter-construction. In the medium term, it is planned to establish a cultural station in the Hansaplatz subway station, which will then address the reconstruction with a view to the 1957 Interbau trade fair in West Berlin.
Opening 21.10.2025, 3 p.m.
