With Positionings, Karawitz (Milena Karanesheva and Mischa Witzmann) explores an architecture in which perceptions of space interact with the inner self, just as each person’s identity is shaped by the space surrounding them. This principle underpins their approach, which incorporates the climate—in its original Greek sense of earth’s inclination to the sun (κλίμα/klima)—as a structuring force influencing orientation, light and living conditions.

A pioneer in the construction of passive buildings in France, Karawitz views architecture as a fluid interaction between the tangible and the intangible, where the building envelope becomes the medium for a delicate interplay between shapes, materials, light and sensations. Space is an animate canvas on which spatial qualities, cultural identities and respect for the environment fuse into an indivisible unity.

By incorporating bioclimatic design, where the sensory experience is the result of meticulous work on the envelope, this approach produces a contemporary and sustainable architecture in harmony with its uses and settings and in continuous dialogue with the earth itself.
