Optimistic Activism
Founded 40 years ago in Groningen and now with offices in the Netherlands and Germany, De Zwarte Hond combines social engagement with high-quality architecture and urban planning. Beyond pure design, the studio assumes responsibility for the quality of the built environment.
"Optimistic Activism" is presented in two exhibition spaces: "HOW" introduces the collaborative working method, in which generosity characterizes both the spatial and social approach. "WHAT" presents twelve projects using models, drawings, and photographs, illustrating how social engagement, design expertise, and craftsmanship are translated into built reality. De Zwarte Hond's methods and projects thus inspire optimism and create places that bring people together and enrich community life.
The exhibition also features the graphic novel METRO O1O, designed by 18 illustrators as an accessible introduction to the history of Rotterdam. It addresses topics such as mobility, climate, inclusion, and migration. 20,000 copies have already been distributed free of charge to children in all secondary schools in Rotterdam to inspire the next generation about their city's future. A Groningen version is currently in development.
