Places of Remembrance

Address
Bei den Mühren 70, 20457 Hamburg
Hours
Wed 1–6 pm, Thu 1–8 pm, Fri 1–6 pm

The culture of mourning is undergoing a transformation. Family graves that have been kept for generations, as well as individual graves, are becoming fewer and less important. A changed attitude to life and a changing, multicultural and mobile society are looking for new forms of burial and remembrance. One answer is collective mourning in the form of communal graves as a final resting place. But what should this place look like and what sensory, experiential, atmospheric and spatial situation should be offered for a communal commemoration? How can the idea of community beyond death - between object, memorial and place of lingering - be given space and expression?

The exhibition "Places of Remembrance" uses sketches and models to present ideas from 16 students for a communal grave for the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist in the Ohlsdorf cemetery. The designs were created as part of impromptu exercises at the BTU Cottbus and TU Dresden.

An exhibition of the AIT-ArchitekturSalon in cooperation with the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist and the BTU Cottbus, Departments of Fine Arts (Prof. Verena Issel), Design and Construction in Existing Structures (Prof. Per Pedersen) as well as Design and Economical Construction (Prof. Roland Bondzio) and the TU Dresden, Institute of Building Theory and Design (Prof. Dr. Henning Haupt).
