Amsterdam is becoming a multicentric city. Both in mindset and policy, Amsterdam has undergone a shift in the past decade: from a concentric city with a historic core to a city with diverse areas developing into complete urban regions with their own character. Photographer Rufus de Vries embarked on a quest to capture this diversity and uniqueness. The photo documentary of this exploration can be viewed at Arcam from July 20th to September 10th, 2023, with a Talk on September 5th.
Rufus de Vries’s photos only offer a glimpse of the richness that the city has to offer. Here are some of the stories that the images tell:
Sloterdijk Stationskwartier is utilised in four dimensions for living, working, sports, travel, and dancing. On a stormy spring morning, entrepreneurs along Willem de Zwijgerlaan provide sustenance for delivery persons, handy workers, and local residents.
There is the newfound allure of Wibautstraat, where students populate the sidewalk and dogs are taken for walks.
The grass field and sidewalk next to Waterlandplein provide an open stage for people from both new and renovated old buildings.
While preparations for King’s Day are in full swing, an elderly lady and a young father have a chance encounter during their regular breakfast at HEMA on Buikslotermeerplein.
