Women in Architecture
Women in Architecture will spotlight contributions women have made to the profession and will provide a current snapshot of the changing role of women in architecture and design. Profiles of exceptional women in architecture and related practices such as urban planning, interiors, preservation and sustainability will be examined in video, text and images. A graphic timeline will track notable statistics and landmark accomplishments supplemented with curated perspectives and anecdotes.
Original research highlighting women who have practiced architecture in the City of Houston, including the youngest generation of leaders, will be displayed parallel to national and international forerunners. Completed and conceptual work will be presented in photographs, models, renderings and illustrations.
Architecture Center Houston will publish a catalog including original essays by invited writers and women featured in the exhibit along with a compilation of the research produced for the exhibition.
The committee is collaborating with the Burdette Keeland Jr Design Exploration Center to create the exhibit’s main feature, a 118-foot long three-dimensional timeline. The timeline’s design is a pixelated field of block forms based on a 6”x6” grid. The forms will be fabricated of plywood, acrylic, foam core, and other materials with printed images and text. Each component of the grid will be pushed or pulled away from the wall to activate space and interaction with the information. Conceptualizing the “line” as a three dimensional grid creates opportunity to see history from a new perspective.
