More and more people are traveling more often, farther, and for shorter periods. What impact do our vacation wishes have on the built environment, the social fabric, and climate change? And how can we imagine tourism that doesn't destroy what it thrives on?

For decades, tourism has been an integral part of the Western lifestyle. It contributes to prosperity and cultural exchange, but it also causes overcrowding, environmental damage, and rising real estate prices. Tourist hotspots suffer from the influx of visitors, while other places are neglected. Regions benefit from tourism but also experience undesirable side effects.

How can tourism be made more sustainable in times of climate crisis, wars, pandemics, and the energy crisis? What role do architecture and spatial planning play? The exhibition explores topics such as mobility, interactions with agriculture, and changing climate and accommodation typologies. It questions whether and how tourism development can be planned.

The exhibition presents initiatives that promote a more sustainable approach to nature and populations, as well as pioneering solutions from various countries. It encourages a kind of vacation that doesn't follow the consumer and growth paradigm. The central question remains: How can we imagine tourism that doesn't destroy what it thrives on?

The traveling exhibition premiered in Vienna in 2024 and is now being shown at the Architektur Haus Kärnten.
