Woman* creates space
The exhibition illustrates the transformation of a place of crime into a place of remembrance, solidarity and prevention - the first feminist art space against violence against women*.
Between 2014 and 2024, 324 women* in Austria were murdered by their (ex-)partner or a family member. (Source: AÖF) A 35-year-old woman was set on fire by her ex-partner in her tobacconist's shop at Nußdorfer Straße 4 in Vienna on March 5, 2021 and succumbed to her serious injuries.
In order to make the complex issue of violence against women* visible, Laura Frediani, FREDIANA.studio, designed this tobacconist's shop into a publicly accessible, dynamic memory and art space. The architecture tells the story of the place in a multi-layered way.
Since December 2023, exhibitions curated by Anna Valentina Ennemoser have been taking place there regularly. Works by contemporary artists*, selected through an open call, deal with the topics of femicide and gender-based violence.
The photographs of Batja Ferch and the expanded opening exhibition by Sabine Groschup will be shown for the first time in the Architektur Haus Kärnten. FRAU schafft Raum* will be presented in detail and invites dialogue.
