Piet Niemann
Twenty years after Expo 2000 in Hanover, photographer Piet Niemann has taken a comprehensive photographic inventory of the Expo site. Sustainability and the successful development of the exhibition grounds into a "city of the future" were explicitly declared as goals here – but how has this promise developed over the past two decades? Piet Niemann's photographs from 2020 are not only visual documents, but also invite reflection on the implementation and fulfillment of such promises. At a time when the construction sector is responsible for around 40 percent of global CO2 emissions and issues such as the circular economy, material scarcity, and reuse are in global focus, Piet Niemann's work provides a current context for discussions about sustainability and responsibility in the construction industry. The work shown was awarded the 2023 European Architectural Photography Prize. This was followed by numerous exhibitions and a large-format illustrated book – which, in turn, received an award at the German Photo Book Prize 24|25 last November.
