Garstenauer Einhundert
Gerhard Garstenauer (1925–2016) undoubtedly ranks high on a list of Austria's most important architects, at least in the second half of the 20th century. And even though his architectural output, with few exceptions, is limited to the city and province of Salzburg, his work has been and continues to be recognized as outstanding both nationally and internationally.
Gerhard Garstenauer's 100th birthday is approaching in 2025 – an anniversary that alone would provide the occasion for a detailed appreciation. This is even more urgent given the sometimes worrying current state of his architectural work. Fortunately, however, Garstenauer's extensive estate has been accessible at the Salzburg Museum since 2010, where it is being digitally recorded and cataloged, making it available for in-depth scholarly evaluation.
A scientific symposium took place in 2024, the contributions and results of which will be incorporated into an exhibition presented by the Salzburg Museum as a guest in the Architecture Initiative.
