After various temporary uses, the former Quelle site is now being converted into a new, multifunctional urban quarter in several stages. Around 1,000 apartments, commercial and social facilities, and local amenities are planned. Characteristic building elements, such as the brick facades, will be preserved in all parts. The character of the 1950s building—one of the largest in Germany—is to be retained. At times, despite its listed status, complete demolition was on the cards. This failed due to resistance from the city and the commitment of investors and architects. The planning is being carried out by ksg - kister scheithauer gross architekten und stadtplaner (Cologne), querwärts ARCHITEKTEN (Nuremberg), and Werner Sobek AG (Stuttgart). Green space planning: Büro LAND.
