Exhibition Competition Results

German Embassy Canberra

From August 1 to 22, 2025, the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) will present the results of the interdisciplinary design competition for the new Chancellery building and the residence of the German Embassy in Canberra, Australia, at the Ernst Reuter House. The results of the planning competition for the Future Center for German Unity and European Transformation in Halle (Saale) will also be on display at the same time.

The competition task was to find high-quality architecture and open space design for the embassy grounds in Canberra that would meet the federal government's climate policy goals while taking local conditions into account. The design was to meet the requirements of an embassy and be planned according to the low-tech principle. The competition was open to architectural firms and working groups from the disciplines of architecture (leading) and landscape architecture. The Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) coordinated and conducted the competition process for the client, the Federal Foreign Office.

The first-place design by RICHTER MUSIKOWSKI Architekten PartGmbB, Berlin, and lahznimmo architects with Spackman Mossop Michaels, both from Sydney, impressed the jury with its simplicity and excellent environmental performance, and was unanimously recommended for implementation. A simple yet elegant timber roof creates a compelling connection between the building volumes and follows the flow of the landscape. The jury particularly praised the democratic expression of the design through its horizontal spatial relationships and its shared orientation towards the garden.

The exhibition can be viewed until August 22, 2025, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Ernst-Reuter-Haus, Straße des 17. Juni 112, 10623 Berlin. Admission is free.
