Permanent exhibition

Bridges and hydraulic engineering

Address
Museumsinsel 1, 80538 Munich

Building is a science in itself. Experienced specialists are needed for the complex process from design to construction and execution. Bridge construction is considered the supreme discipline in civil engineering. This is due to the often gigantic dimensions of the buildings, which are often innovative prototypes or unique pieces and shape entire landscapes.

No less exciting is hydraulic engineering, which presents engineers with its own challenges. The diverse projects range from canal, lock and harbor construction to dams and hydroelectric power plants.

The Bridges and Hydraulic Engineering exhibition is as multifaceted as civil engineering: solid and flowing, rock-hard and dynamic.

In the exhibition Bridges and Hydraulic Engineering things go haywire! Not just thematically, but also spatially: the exhibition takes you through the engineering sciences of hydraulic engineering and bridge construction on different levels. Another area serves as a special exhibition area for changing focal points: First of all, the focus here is on concrete and you can admire the first building made of reinforced concrete in Germany: the dog house of the building contractor and concrete construction pioneer Conrad Freytag from 1884! The large arch is spanned by a glass bridge that swings through the room as a walkable suspension bridge. On, under, in front of, behind and next to it you can experience how findings from the natural sciences are put into practice in civil engineering with numerous original parts from the historic water pipe to the bridge cable, life-like models, detailed dioramas, informative media stations and interactive demonstrations.
