What Buildings Teach
Günther Domenig's stone house interweaves archetypal and archaic environmental, construction, design and landscape motifs with biographical-anecdotal and erratic-obstinate elements in the direction of a contemporary "landscape-bound" building. As part of the Architecture Days 2024, an exhibition in Domenig's stone house (1984-2008) in Steindorf am Ossiacher See analyzes the complex design ideas and architectural connections in the stone house and presents them in drawings and models. It also addresses the question of how the stone house is embedded in the landscape around Lake Ossiach at different scales.
These graphic analyses allow programmatic, typological and tectonic conclusions to be drawn, which are then further developed in exemplary design approaches. The exhibition shows the results of two courses at TU Graz, which are based on workshops lasting several days in the Steinhaus, where (in the words of Friedrich Achleitner) Domenig's "exposure and exhaustive thinking" was studied.
