Where Is The Magic?

Architektur Galerie Berlin

Hours
Tue–Fri 2–7 pm, Sat 12 am–6 pm

Public space—so unassuming, so dilapidated, so unpredictable, so diverse, and so valuable—presents a wide spectrum that invites different interpretations depending on one’s perspective. The exhibition explores the value of public space with a particular focus on its atmosphere. To this end, the gallery space transforms into an extension of public space: the leaves covering the floor rustle and fill the air with the scent of autumn, while Berlin-style benches invite visitors to linger, chat, and observe. Even the characteristic light that has defined the gallery’s image for more than 25 years changes as it interacts with the streetlights that come on at dusk. In this way, the view framed by the display window—out onto the autumnal reality of Karl-Marx-Allee—enters into a dialogue with the object-like, atmospheric installation in the warm gallery space.

In this way, what the firm FRL—Franz Reschke Landscape Architecture—calls “magic” becomes a vivid experience for visitors to the exhibition. Atmosphere, space, and the design of public open spaces have been central to FRL’s work over the past 15 years. The unexpected—arising from appropriation and use—is always part of this reality. It is clear that the term “magic” holds a different meaning for everyone, and FRL is playing on the individual expectations of each visitor.

The exhibition is complemented by a catalog featuring several hundred analog photographs. These reflect and illustrate the observations collected jointly by the forty colleagues in public spaces over the past three years. For the firm, the exhibition serves as a snapshot, as it considers itself far from having reached the goal of its work—but rather “somewhere in the middle.”

Among the best-known projects of the firm FRL – Franz Reschke Landschaftsarchitektur, founded in Berlin in 2011, are The Space of Synagogues in Lviv (2016), the Weser Promenade and Archaeological Park in Höxter (2023), and the 40-hectare Neuss City Park (2026). The firm is currently working on the Solitude Promenade in Basel (2035) and the Harbor Park in Rüdesheim (2029). Franz Reschke is a member of the advisory board of the Federal Foundation for Building Culture and a member of the executive committee of the Association of German Landscape Architects.
