Housing, Room by Room

The exhibition Housing, Room by Room offers a journey through the home—its history, current state, and challenges—as seen through the rooms that make it up. By exploring these typologies, which are fraught with spatial, formal, and political questions, the exhibition aims to delve into the depth and complexity inherent in housing.

The exhibition explores three time periods—historical, contemporary, and future-oriented—through open-ended commissions given to six curators, each responsible for a specific room: living room, kitchen, outdoor spaces, bathrooms, bedroom, and hallway. From Labussière’s alcove kitchen to Schütte-Lihotzky’s Frankfurt kitchen, from the bourgeois salon to the living room, the exhibition traces an atlas of our interiors, composed of facades, floor plans, elevations, drawings, and fragments. Each room is examined through what it contains: forms, uses, and objects. By creating a dialogue between different periods, typologies, and styles, the Maison de l’architecture Ile-de-France aims, through this exhibition, to frame and spark discussion on the major issues facing housing today.
