“dérive shares insights from urban research, art, and activism, and is committed to the democratization of urban society and the strengthening of critical public discourse.”

Who has a right to the city? “dérive. Horizont Stadt” invites you on a journey through academia, art, and activism: Exploring central themes such as the housing crisis, urban space as public space, and the city and democracy, the exhibition offers insights into the journal’s theoretical and practical engagement with urban space as social space.

Since 2000, dérive has been dedicated to exploring and communicating the concept of the “city” from multiple perspectives and through multimedia. The “right to the city” and “urban society” (Henri Lefebvre) form the horizon of all our activities, serving as a vision of an emancipatory social order in which urban space is collectively shaped, diversely appropriated, and open to encounter, difference, and participation. Founded out of curiosity and a love for the city, dérive has developed into an international network of committed urban researchers, planners, artists, and activists whose work on the city, space, and society is presented and discussed in dérive – Journal of Urban Research, on Radio dérive, at urbanize! Int. Festival for Urban Explorations, as well as in numerous other projects. The exhibition “dérive. Horizon City” draws on the journal to exemplify this multifaceted engagement with urban space.
