Fifty Something Gasoline Stations
Gas stations are more than just infrastructure spaces for cars. They serve as small local suppliers, places of communication, spaces of nostalgia, shining landmarks – but also as representatives of a fossil fuel mega-industry. They have been part of our cityscape for decades. But gas stations are increasingly disappearing: The transition to sustainable forms of mobility and electromobility is gradually leading to the obsolescence of the traditional petroleum gas station, turning it into a relic of a fossil fuel age in a few decades. Using the city of Frankfurt am Main as an example, the exhibition documents all existing petroleum gas stations, as well as those closed since 2020, accompanied by explanatory infographics. This raises the question of the future of gas stations, which are also always a specific social space – can the resulting gaps in the city's fabric be used as spaces for urban society?
