Nadogradnje

Roof structures as artefacts of urban self-regulation are the most visually defining element of informal architecture in the cities of former Yugoslavia. The documentary work "Nadogradnje" by the Cologne architectural photographer Gregor Theune shows these structures, which are already anchored in the regional architectural history and which rapidly spread in the post-Yugoslav power vacuum. The superstructures are not only fascinating for design reasons - they also show the complexity of urban processes in the area of ​​tension between architecture, politics and society. They show strategies for resilience in housing construction, mostly characterized by low-threshold, low-tech processes beyond state-regulated planning.

Gregor Theune examines this urban phenomenon and documents it in a series of 29 large-format photographs, a selection of which can be seen in the architecture showcase.

Together with the designer Sven Quadflieg, Gregor Theune published the book of the same title, published by M BOOKS, which examines »Nadogradnje« from the perspective of various scientific disciplines.
