Benedict Tonon is regarded as a representative of modernism that has become reflective: In two books recently published by Zurich publisher Park Books, the architect - long-standing professor at the Berlin University of the Arts - presents his own consequence of this reflexivity:

It is published in the theory volume Architecture – A Hermeneutic Art. Event, interpretation, meaning conveyed, while the work publication Benedict Tonon. Bridges, houses, places provide a vivid idea background.

Both volumes together reflect Tonon's concern for a new combination of theory and practice as a design tool.

Dealing with a multitude of calculable and nameable logics of possible being challenges the designers to an art of interpretation and interpretation (hermeneutike techne) in individual cases. Each work becomes a production-aesthetic event of idea development and form finding.

The obstinacy of the work forms the pivot of Tonon's thinking and at the same time the starting point of his numerous special buildings and projects. Each new design is created as a testimony of decisiveness in the interplay of time and place and is unique: one work - one world.
