Visiting
We understand the space from the inside and experience a building from the inside out. We rarely see the city from above, so why should we design it from this perspective? What is hidden behind an apartment door?
Used, lively and vibrant architecture.
The exhibition "VISITING - Inken Baller and Hinrich Baller, Berlin 1966-1989" shows current insights into the unconventional buildings of the pre-reunification Berlin period by Inken and Hinrich Baller. Overarching design principles and the outstanding qualities of the apartments, which were mostly built to social housing standards, become visible.
The Bachmann residential building in Hinwil (CH), built in 1966/67, is the first joint project by Inken and Hinrich Baller. Typical spatial themes that are also relevant in the Ballers' later work, such as the visible construction and curved walls, are already visible here. Flowing spatial sequences and a close connection between interior and exterior spaces are reminiscent of Hans Scharoun's single-family homes. The building blends into the landscape and almost disappears into the mountainous topography.
Between 1966 and 1989, Inken Baller (*1942) and Hinrich Baller (*1936) jointly planned and built 26 buildings in West Berlin. These striking buildings, previously known primarily from the outside, can be experienced from the inside and are accompanied by impressions from conversations with current residents and from Inken and Hinrich Baller themselves. The exhibition shows the understanding of space and the unusual floor plan solutions beyond the standard and asks what today's housing construction can learn from this.
