The exhibition THE DEMOLITION QUESTION & POWER TO RENOVATION approaches the still all too present phenomenon of demolition and its consequences from various perspectives. The new exhibition will open at the DAZ on March 13, 2025, and you are cordially invited to attend.

The exhibition and publication project THE DEMOLITION QUESTION, circulated by Alexander Stumm, shows around a hundred buildings in Berlin, Kassel, Munich and the state of Brandenburg that have recently been demolished or are threatened with demolition. Based on the work of several universities, demolition stories are told and the ecological, political, socio-economic and building-cultural consequences of a practice anchored in fossil modernity are analyzed. The exhibition also draws attention to current activist anti-demolition projects and declares the demolition question, alongside the housing and land question, to be one of the central challenges of our time.

Demolition not only destroys large amounts of energy, emissions and built-up resources bound up in the buildings, but also destroys a large amount of affordable housing. POWER TO RENOVATION, a film project by the Europe-wide initiative HouseEurope!, illustrates that this practice is part of real estate speculation. In favor of a more ecologically and socially effective construction practice, it calls for renovation and modernization to be prioritized over demolition and new construction. Feel free to vote for the EU citizens' initiative in the booth at the DAZ.
