Urban Sketching und Reisezeichnungen

Michael Persch will take us on a journey to Asia and Australia with his drawings from April 24th to May 31st in the Haus der Architekten, Goetheallee 37 in Dresden, where he lived and worked as an architect for a long time. About ten years ago, he accidentally discovered the local “Urban Sketching” group in Singapore and quickly became an active member. The exhibition is open Monday to Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What is the global trend of “urban sketching” about?
First of all, there is a lot of overlap with the classic architectural travel drawing in terms of the drawing approach and the sketchy results. The main difference lies primarily in the social aspect of drawing together in urban spaces. The global “Urban Sketching” groups make it easy to meet like-minded people to sketch together while traveling.

As a drawing style he mostly uses waterproof black ink with watercolors. For him, color is an essential element in representing the colorful traditional architecture of Asia: from colorful Chinese shophouses, to Hindu temple towers, golden mosque domes, Buddhist pagodas and stupas to Balinese multi-story wooden temples. The result is not finished works of art, but rather drawings that attempt to capture the distinctive features of a place or building.

Michael Persch studied architecture at TU Dresden and EAPLD Paris, completed a master's degree in sustainable development at the University of New South Wales in Sydney and qualified as a timber construction engineer at TH Augsburg. As an architect, he has worked since 2003 in various architectural offices in Dresden, Berlin, Copenhagen, Sydney and Singapore. Since 2022 he has been back in Plauen at Neumann Architekten.
